G7 summit in Évian: Confederation to contribute to security costs

Bern, 01.04.2026 — The G7 summit, organised by France, will take place from 15 to 17 June 2026 in Évian, near the border with Switzerland. In a context of heightened global tensions, the summit requires exceptional security measures, in Switzerland as well. The cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais have therefore asked for support from the Confederation. At its meeting on 1 April 2026, the Federal Council decided that the Confederation will contribute to the security costs borne by the three cantons.

From 15 to 17 June 2026, the town of Évian in Haute-Savoie will host the highest representatives of the G7 member countries and the European Union, as well as other invited heads of state and government. They will be accompanied by official delegations, as well as numerous media representatives. The summit, organised by France, will have repercussions for Switzerland's security, in particular due to the use of Geneva international airport and other Swiss infrastructure.

Switzerland is obliged to ensure the safety of persons who enjoy special protection under Swiss and international law. At its meeting on 1 April 2026, the Federal Council decided to consider the summit an ‘extraordinary event’ under the Internal Security Act. As a result of this classification, the Confederation will contribute 80% of the cost of the security measures to be taken by the cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais.

Cooperation between the Confederation and the cantons

The cantonal authorities will take the necessary security measures. The situation is being regularly assessed with a view to adapting these measures, in close cooperation with the Federal Office of Police (fedpol), the State Secretariat for Security Policy (SEPOS), the Swiss Armed Forces, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) and the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS).

At its meeting on 28 January 2026 the Federal Council approved the deployment of a Swiss Armed Forces support service with the potential to exceed 2,000 military personnel, as well as the implementation of temporary restrictions on the use of airspace in the Lake Geneva region. The Swiss parliament approved the subsidiary involvement of the Swiss Armed Forces in the spring session of 2026. The cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais have also requested an intercantonal police operation (IKAPOL).
