Following 20 years of war, insecurity and isolation Cambodia is one of the poorest countries of the Mekong region, with very bad health indicators. In 1992 the Swiss Paediatrician Dr. Beat Richner signed an agreement with the Royal Government of Cambodia to rehabilitate the Kantha Bhopa Children Hospital in Phnom Penh. In addition to the renovation and construction of buildings and the provision of modern equipments and drugs, he committed to train a new generation of paediatricians and paediatric nurses. Thanks to his huge personal investment Dr Richner managed to set up and run modern paediatric hospitals offering high quality care for the Children of Cambodia and excellent training and research opportunities for Cambodian paediatric Doctors and Nurses. SDC supports this project since 1994. The present level of support is 2.5 million Swiss Francs a year.
