South Africa and southern Africa

HIV/AIDS marks a severe development and humanitarian crisis in southern Africa, which remains by far the worst-affected region in the world. HIV/AIDS has a devastating impact on individuals, households, communities and on all sectors and put in jeopardy any future development for the next generations. An estimated 15.6 million children in Africa have lost their mother or both parents to AIDS, and the numbers are expected to increase dramatically in the coming decades, especially in Southern Africa.

On the SDC main website, you find an overview on SDC's activities in South Africa and southern Africa.

The Swiss Cooperation Office in South Africa runs its own website. including information on its Education and HIV/AIDS programme in South Africa.

HIV/AIDS remains one of the leading causes of death in South Africa. In the last five years the infection rate has increased, and more than 20% of the population is infected. Joint efforts by the government and Civil Society have been made through communication campaigns, preventative and curative programmes.

SDC supports these efforts. Example: SDC provided support to the Human Science Research Council (HSRC) for the development of a statistical tool to be used for social research, particularly on HIV/AIDS (see the HSRC study of HIV/AIDS - household survey 2002 - the first major survey to provide a comprehensive view of prevalence, behaviour and the effects of media awareness campaigns throughout the South African population).

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is treated as a general concern throughout SDC programme in South Africa. (Areas of focus: Governance, Democracy, Human Rights, Land affairs and Education).

The Coordination office has set up action plans to address HIV/Aids both in-house and with its partner organizations. In addition to including the HIV/Aids dimension in its projects, SDC South Africa also supports projects dealing specifically with the issue. SDC is also in the process of developing a HIV/AIDS programme at regional level.

The Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative HIV/AIDS was established to improve psycho-social assistance and opportunities for children affected by AIDS.
