Priorities in Health

Sexual and Reproductive health and rights

Health features prominently in three of the Millenium Development Goals, but many policy makers were concerned that the link to sexual and reproductive health was intially missing. In 2005 a World Summit resolved to achieve universal access to reproductive health by 2015 and promote gender equality and end discrimination against women. By the terms of their agreement, the leaders integrated the goal of access to reproductive health into national strategies to attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to end poverty, reduce maternal death, promote gender equality and combat HIV/AIDS.

The Summit marked a reaffirmation of the Cairo Commitment which continues to determine international and Swiss action in this field. The Programme of Action of the 1994 International conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in Cairo and signed up to by 179 countries, defined reproductive health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in all matters relating to the reproductive system. Reproductive health therefore implies that people are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life, to have the capability to reproduce and the freedom to decide if, when, and how often to do so”.

"The Millennium Development Goals, particularly the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, cannot be achieved if questions of population and reproductive health are not squarely addressed. And that means stronger efforts to promote women's rights, and greater investment in education and health, including reproductive health and family planning."

Kofi A. Annan (United Nations Secretary General 1997 - 2006)

A rights based approach to sexual and reproductive health focuses on client centred services, advancing gender equality and equity and the empowerment of women. Women, men and adolescents all have the right to have control over and to decide freely and responsibly on matters related to their sexuality, including their sexual and reproductive health.

Information Brief Unsafe Abortion (09.2008)
Abortion is a highly sensitive and controversial topic, and one of the most neglected public health issue. Estimates show that women seek abortions around the world, regardless of the national legal regulations. For different reasons, a proportion of those women turn to untrained providers, unhygienic facilities or/and unsafe procedures to terminate their pregnancy.

Information brief on the new Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine (10.2007)
This document summarises current evidence on the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Indeed, the genital infection with HPV is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract. Nearly all genital cancer cases in women are linked to this infection. Over 90% of these cancers occur in developing countries, where cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women.
