Priorities in Health

Health research

With the ascent of Global Research Initiatives, the landscape of health research for development has changed in important ways: global expenditure on health research has increased more than fourfold in the last 10 years and there are now many more actors engaged in research that is relevant to the needs of developing countries making.

However, gaps still exist and concerns about the way research agendas are set continue. Research needs in developing countries are constantly changing, an example being the rise in the burden of non-communicable diseases.

SDC considers health research an essential tool to provide evidence for policy formulation and to translate policy into effective action. The agency supports and participates in the annual Global Forum for Health Research. SDC strives to improve the relevance of international research to the developing countries’ needs and prioritises research benefiting the poor. This includes funding research into “so-called” neglected diseases such as tuberculosis, sleeping sickness, and kala azar that kill millions each year, primarily amongst the very poorest. Such diseases do not constitute a valuable enough „market“to stimulate the production of new medicines.

At country level, SDC gives priority to Essential National Health Research and to operations research. Research questions supported have direct relevance and implications for SDC’s objectives in health cooperation and on policymaking and decision taking. Institutional and individual capacity building for research are still areas in need of strengthening and a focus area of SDC's response. Furthermore, enhanced dissemination and use of research results in countries of the South and the East are actively promoted.
